Yes, it’s “she”, and yes, Jackie Shane is “transgender”. The pronouns, and respect may have eluded her in the 60s, but no longer. The Nashville star made a name for herself in Toronto in the early sixties singing powerful soul songs with a hot band.
Miracle label Numero Group, hottest reissue in the land spent the last two years tracking Shane down. She’s back in Toronto, apparently, living the quiet life, so reclusive she wouldn’t even let her new label head come by to visit for a while. She sounds like a hell of a dinner date, though.
This collection is the first ever artists approved collection of all six of her 45s, and recordings of two live sets at Sapphire Tavern in 1967 (which includes three previously unreleased tracks).
