Listen To Roadhouse Radio NOW 11/11/15: A Tribute To Allen Toussaint

PLAYBACK available until 11/25 via KEXP::

Without a doubt, Allen Toussaint was one of my favorite musicians. He was a writer, producer, arranger, and on occasion performer and recording artist in his own right. He had a gift. His golden touch is unparalleled. He was shrewd enough to know that to maximize his amazing gift as a songwriter, he’d enable others to sing his songs and be his muse. His amazing run as producer in the 60’s & 70’s produced a million hit records which define southern soul and funk, and his work with singers like Aaron Neville, Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, and Jesse Hill in the early 60’s define New Orleans R&B.

He was supremely funky. In the mid-sixties he teamed up with Marshall Sehorn and created SanSu, a production company in New Orleans in which Lee Dorsey became his primary muse and vocalist (“his voiced sounded like a smile”, Toussaint would say). The house band was The Meters. Later, he would produce The Meters‘ own records, a mardi gras indian album by the Wild Tchoupitoulas, Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade”, The Pointer Sisters, Dr John, Bobby Charles and The Band, and nearly every artist of note in the city of New Orleans.

He was part of a long line of New Orleans piano professors in the 1950’s. His signature sound featured his piano rolls, laid back back-beat, and that unique second-line rhythm which Toussaint nearly invented (but really just perfected). The two hours of music that starts this show will astound you in terms of how much good music this man made in his lifetime. RIP Allen Toussaint. Everything in heaven is Gonna Be Fonky From Now On.

In the third hour of the show, I play today’s best County Music artists, like Sturgill Simpson, Whitey Morgan, Jeremy Pinnell, Sam Outlaw, and Chris Stapelton. Plus the new one from Gil Landry of Old Crow Medicine Show.
